01/11/2010 | Area of work: Sustainable value chains
At an international conference on Illegal Trade in Natural Resources in Brussels, on 29 and 30 September 2010, Mark van Dorp gave a presentation on the illegal and unsustainable trade in bushmeat, or meat from wild animals, in Africa, based in his extensive research on bushmeat in Gabon and Cameroon. Key message was that there is a need to revitalise the lobby for an active role of the EU in the bushmeat crisis with a focus on health risks to the EU ci:zens and on the importance of biodiversity conservation. The event, held at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels, sought to promote EU-based solutions for combatting illegal trade in natural resources. It was organized by the Institute for Environmental Security.
